Personality:
Ladanelan Lavellan is not one that any who met him would consider the "hero type", particularly at the beginning of Inquisition. He is humble, and has always done his best to reinforce that he is just a normal person like anyone else in spite of his extraordinary circumstances. He is also prone to cowardice in one form or another, especially in the beginning of Inquisition when he would quickly balk and defer to anyone confronting him.
Eventually once he felt more comfortable in the belief that he is not going to be killed as a scapegoat for the explosion at the conclave, he slowly grows less skittish. He still viewed himself as something as an outsider of everything, so when he's nominated to be the leader of the Inquisition, he honestly thought it was ridiculous. He was being hailed as a prophet for a religion he didn't believe, and elected leader of this cult of humans. It was hilarious, but also preferable to execution so he rolled with it.
While his fear drove him forward to complete the impossible tasks at hand to save Thedas, his motivations were always more personal and sometimes even selfish. The original threat of the breech was a danger to everyone, but considering "everyone" consisted mostly of humans, and most humans were generally terrible to elves, he did not care overly much about "everyone". However his clan was as threatened by the breech as anyone else, so he pushed on for their sakes. After given the title of Inquisitor (after he spent that evening laughing over the sheer irony of it) he decided to help his people however he could. He sought to make life better for mages, and free them from their oppression- as there is a Dalish philosophy saying "never again will we submit" referring to the time elves spent in slavery. The mages may be a mix of humans as well as elves, but it is a value he holds close to his heart, and he believes it is something everyone should live by. He also did his best to help elves as well of course, he did not wish to make others suffer in doing so, but such was not always avoidable such with the assassination of Empress Celene.
Being Dalish and the unique relationship his clan had with humans has played a large part in who he is. Once he came into his magic he was assigned to be trained by the Keeper of Clan Lavellan as her First (the Keeper's successor). He was trained in how to lead and guide his clan, ancient Elven lore, and of course magic. While this provided him with basic skills in leadership, it also left him stunted in other ways, as he was somewhat isolated from the rest of his clan for his unique studies. Despite living as part of the nomadic clan, he can be lacking in some basic survival skills, he cannot swim or hunt, and tends to be rather uncoordinated. He is not even particularly fond of many things regarding the outdoors in general. Though his clans habit of trading fairly regularly with humans cities and towns did help him learn a basic understanding on how to deal with them civilly as opposed to other clans that are more hostile or skittish around humans.
He has learned to deal with humans with a good dose of lighthearted jests. He also tends to shrug off his shortcomings with cracks about his own mishaps... and anything else he finds worthy of a good dose of humor. With the dire times in the inquisition he has taken to using humor to try and ease those around him, or to passive aggressively make a point. He does not care for flat out arguing but but he's not above throwing in some backhanded insults in the guise of a joke. That doesn't mean he can always maintain a face of jovial cheer, he may have a rare outburst, usually regarding the rights of mages or in defense of his people. After the death of his clan, such outbursts have grown more common but not enough for strangers to think as odd. Particularly for a Dalish elf who are somewhat notorious for being bitter towards those they consider outsiders.
That said, he did manage to fall for a bit of a Chantry shrill. Cassandra was one of the first people he met upon waking after the incident at the conclave, where she threatened his life on several separate occasions shortly thereafter. He initially found her both terrifying and attractive, but her ideals, passion, and romantic side won him over completely. He saw her as a fount of strength from which he could draw from, and while their ideals did not always align, he found that listening to her helped ease some of the strain of wondering if what he was doing was right.
At endgame, while at his core he is the same, he has faced numerous hardships that weigh upon him. He lost his clan, his faith, his arm, and was betrayed by a friend he looked up to. He is slower to trust, particularly of humans, and is at a loss as to what to believe regarding his heritage. He struggled in his time in the Inquisition to maintain what he was, his beliefs as a Dalish elf. Learning that almost everything he believed was false, he is struggling to find himself again. He still is generally jovial and friendly to those he meets out of habit, but he lets his guard drop around those that have earned his trust.
Overall he is still a kind person that does try to do the right thing, though he no longer has any desire to take the spotlight to be a savior. He was content to live out his retirement helping Cassandra rebuild the seekers while wearily juggling a search for Solas.

Generic Mage Things: Mages can be utilizes in summoning veilfire (the "memory of flame", it gives off no heat, and won't burn down a candle, but offers light), as well as moving things around and setting them appropriately, such as reassembling a collapsed stone bridge, or wooden stairs. All mages are capable of dreaming with complete coherency, and the Fade (the realm of dreams and spirits) is where they draw their power from.
Racial Benefits: Elves receive a natural boost in stats pertaining to magic, as well as a 25% boost in ranged defense (including magical projectiles). Elves also see a little better in the dark than humans do.
Vir'abelasan: Drank from the Well of Sorrows, meaning he's got a hint of the knowledge of the ancient Elvhen whispering to him. The problem is he doesn't 100% understand ancient Elvhen, so he can't always make sense of it. Also he's bound to the will of the Evanuris Mythal. This also let him "commune" with a dragon, convincing it to help him, but it would only do so once.
Alignment: Peromei: despair and hope
Much of the success of the inquisition was related to the hope it brought the people of Thedas during an impossible time, much of that being due to the rumors of the "Herald of Andraste" and his impossible feats. The cycles of hope and despair was also more personal as a leader facing impossible odds. There were setbacks, like the loss of Haven and the death of his clan, but he's had to find his own hope to push forward and keep going both for himself and the people that look to him for guidance.

The previous day had been a lesson in attempting to keep himself busy enough so as not to dwell on the situation at hand. For all his desire to be as far out of the limelight as he could be, now that he was little more than a simple civilian he had no idea what to do with himself. There were no letters to be sent, intel to sift through, soldiers to command, nothing. Just mundane tasks of tending chickens, and completing odd rituals by the water. A part of him had been hoping the odd ritual would provide something familiar, like a demon popping out to try and kill him, or blood mages turning it into a sticky hairy abomination that would try and kill him! He realized looking forward to such things probably said something about him, but he wasn't willing to think too deeply on that. What he got was something unexpected, and his feeling on it were conflicted.
He had barely opened his eyes when he discovered something laying on his bedside table. Out of half asleep habit he reached over for it, assuming it was a somewhat urgent letter for someone to slip into his quarters to deliver it. But it was no letter, he felt the frame, a painting? He pushed himself up for a closer look, and he simply froze. For the moment he was unsure what to make of it. The air in the room felt as still as his heart, whether that was part of the peculiar effects of this place or not didn't even cross his mind. He couldn't say how long it was before he felt his heart ache and his gut churn into a knot.
He held the picture of his mother delicately in his hand, and it was like the pain was torn anew, yet there was a bittersweetness to it. When had been the last time he had even seen his mother? Three years ago now? He never thought he would get a chance to see her face again yet here it was, as clear as ever. So entranced was he in the photograph that he failed to notice the effect he was having on the surroundings. The one lone plant in his room had bloomed, but also had twisted into a gnarled knot, and the air around him grew so thick and humid one could barely breath without choking.
It wasn't until he heard a pounding at the apartment door accompanied by an angry shout that he snapped himself out of it. The air cleared, and the sudden lack of heat further startled him, or maybe the cool air was the result of being startled? Regardless, he gently set the picture down on his bed, and went to the door to apologize whoever it was he had bothered.
